Let this be a lesson! Be ABSOLUTELY sure that you KNOW what you really want or even DESIRE first before buying anything!!
So basically this year I spend no significant amount of $$ on my old toy .. my car but gained a few more $$ ones :P
- 1:6 Figures $$$$$$$$$$$$
- DSLR $$$$$
- Acrylic Cases $$
My Spending on 1:6 will be endless with the factual trend of HT bringing out one masterpiece after another :'( :D
Acrylic Cases I think the only other investment I have not made until this point is a new house with a bigger garage or a dedicated workshop :D
DSLR well that really is the one I have not prepared myself well enough so let this be a lesson to anyone out there:
- Listen to your experienced DSLR friends!!! It's all about the lenses!!!!
- determine and prioritize a list of type of shots you will be taking e.g. indoor, low light, outdoor, night scene, daytime, landscape, portrait, ppl, babies, nature, HD video.......
- don't fear the seemingly $$$ models.. thats really the real kicker and main reason for my major FAIL
ok so here is my short but $$$ story:
- Jan 09: Panasonic LX3... loved it, but not as good as I thought in low light but the best you can get in P&S
- May 09: Canon T1i... was really eying the Panasonic GH1 but really can't see myself spending $1800 on a DSLR but boy was I WRONG!!!
- realized kit lens will not do for indoor, lowlight and flashless pictures and for sure not video.
- started considering and testing faster lenses, however affordable 50mm 1.4&1.8 were no good for indoor shots as too tele and for video 1.4 was great but T1i video is really lacking and 50mm is just not wide enough (for portrait maybe ok but not for group photos) In the end to get the lenses I wanted I would have to spend significant amounts
- Oct 09: Panasonic GF1.... repurposed my lens budget to get this as the 20mm 1.7 lens was exactly what I wanted and even the kit was potentially only a little more than buying a Canon 35mm fast lens. Sold my LX3 as well (which I regret till this day..The Macro mode was so nice and is so fitting for my new 1:6 hobby... oh well I guess I can check out S90)
- Nov 09: Panasonic G1.... GF1 is great but just the 20mm was not good enough so I found this used bundle with 14-45 and 45-200 for reasonable price. Was going to sell G1 body but kept it for the time being to try. Also considering that buying another battery would cost me $100 it almost made no sense to sell the body (oh evil). I eventually realized G1 body is really not much larger than GF1 and much better for gripping and the articulating LCD was quite nice
- Dec 09: Panasonic GH1..... 3 lenses and 3 bodies later I realized that it GH1 is worth the $$$ just because of the 14-140. The HD Video is just a very nice bonus on top. So I started selling everything else now :P
- In The End: Keeping Panasonic GH1, 20mm, 14-140mm and if I can't sell GF1 for a good price I am keeping that too :D
D-Tour cost: Lets just say I lost very little on LX3, and G1 but the T1i I lost 50% as retail price dropped significantly. GF1 I am not willing to loose much especially since body alone is sold out everywhere so we will see. But if I had known what I wanted, the GH1 would not have seemed $$ and I would not have lost all that money on the T1i
Yes lesson learned.. sometimes saving money actually costs more money (oh the woman will not comply to that!!)
